Why this community fund deserves a second look

This time of year, our mailboxes tend to be full of requests from charities, food banks and others who are asking us to donate to their causes.

How to choose?

Here are two reasons why the Northeast Times’ Eleanor Smylie Community Fund is worthy of serious consideration.

First, this newspaper absorbs all the administrative costs. Every penny you donate goes for gift cards that can be used by families in need to buy food for Christmas and toys for their children.

Second, you are helping your neighbor, someone local who could use a helping hand.

Many of the requests we have received for help are heartbreaking. Here’s an excerpt from one letter:

“I just want to see smiles on my children’s faces when they come down the steps on Christmas morning and see that Santa didn’t forget them, and knows that they were good girls this year.”

Please help us help her and all the others. Thanks so much.
