StartFragment

The Mayfair Business Association is finalizing plans for two of its biggest events of the year.

On Saturday, May 19, the business association will team with the Mayfair Civic Association to present the fourth annual Mayfair Fallen Heroes 5k Run & Walk.

That same day, the business association will hold its fifth annual Mayfair May Fair.

The Fallen Heroes Run will honor firefighter Joseph L. Konrad, who was assigned to Engine 25 in Fishtown. A 15-year fire department veteran, Konrad died June 13, 1984 after responding to an arson fire at 2002 Tulip St. He was killed when the second and third floors of the rowhome collapsed into the basement. He was 37.

Konrad Square, a park in Fishtown, is named in his memory, and there is also a mural of his likeness in the neighborhood.

The prime sponsors of the Fallen Heroes Run are Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, Precision Mechanical Services and International Association of Fire Fighters Local 22.

The event will be held rain or shine. The entry fee is $20 if paid by May 15 and $25 thereafter.

Race-day registration will take place from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. in Abraham Lincoln High School’s parking lot at Sackett Street and Ryan Avenue.

The walk/run will begin at 8:30. An awards ceremony is scheduled for 10:30 at Mayfair Memorial Playground, at Rowland Avenue and Vista Street.

Proceeds will benefit Hero Thrill Show Inc., which provides college scholarships for the children of Philadelphia police officers and firefighters killed or disabled in the line of duty; a memorial plaque that will be dedicated on Sept. 19 for Konrad; and the continued rebuilding of Mayfair Memorial Playground.

As for the May Fair, there will be a variety of activities along Frankford Avenue, from Harbison Avenue to Rhawn Street. Many of the activities will be held near Cottman Avenue. The event will go on rain or shine.

Opening festivities will run from 11 a.m. to noon.

The day will include sidewalk sales, giveaways, prizes, snacks, a dog parade contest and live music from noon to 6 p.m. by Boss Hydro, Zengage, Stems and Seeds, Rev, A.J. Slick, Mike LeCompt, Joe Coyne and Mike McCullough.

A car and truck show will run from 2 p.m. to sunset on the 6200 block of Hawthorne St. Anyone who wants to enter an antique, muscle or race car can register by contacting Mike Williams at 267-334-0118 or mike.jp.williams@gmail.com

The “after dark” May Fair will start at 5 p.m. along the 6200 block of Frankford Ave. There will be an art show and live music by the SexySadie Band and Huge Jackman.

Though not an official part of the May Fair, the 15th Police District Advisory Council will hold its community day on the 3500 block of Ryan Ave. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Also, the Philly Pretzel Factory will hold a block party at Frankford and Bleigh avenues.

Parking will be free on the avenue.
