Owner guilty of torching shop for insurance dough

A fed­er­al jury on Thursday found a former North­east Phil­adelphia auto re­pair shop own­er guilty of ar­son and fraud in con­nec­tion with a May 24, 2010, fire at his busi­ness.

The blaze oc­curred at One Source Mo­tors, 14001 Bustleton Ave. Mi­chael Giamo, 29, of Hunt­ing­don Val­ley, staged the fire, then col­lec­ted more than $127,000 in in­sur­ance pro­ceeds, lied to fire in­vest­ig­at­ors and at­temp­ted to des­troy in­crim­in­at­ing re­cords, the U.S. At­tor­ney’s Of­fice said.

The jury con­victed Giamo of mail fraud, con­spir­acy, us­ing fire to com­mit mail fraud, dam­aging or des­troy­ing by fire a build­ing used in in­ter­state com­merce, mak­ing false state­ments and ob­struc­tion of justice.

Giamo faces a man­dat­ory min­im­um of 15 years in pris­on and up to life in pris­on, along with a fine of up to $2 mil­lion, along with for­feit­ure of as­sets. His sen­ten­cing hear­ing is sched­uled for June 20. ••
