Star's Summer Calendar Series

It’s sum­mer­time! Star is now of­fer­ing a week-by-week list of city­wide sum­mer events in ad­di­tion to our reg­u­lar cal­en­dar. Get out there and soak up some sun!

Wed­nes­day, June 13

At the Read­ing Ter­min­al Mar­ket (12th and Fil­bert streets) every Wed­nes­day and Sat­urday start­ing at 10 a.m., there is a 75-minute walk­ing tour that provides a sampling of some of Philly’s food fa­vor­ites, like cheesesteaks, ho­agies and pret­zels.

Groups meet at the mar­ket’s in­form­a­tion desk. Tick­ets cost $15.95, and you’ll need a re­ser­va­tion to at­tend. Call 800-838-3006 for re­ser­va­tions. ••

Thursday, June 14

En­joy Scratch Night at the Live Arts Stu­dio! Artists will present some of their yet-un­real­ized and ex­per­i­ment­al per­form­ances. If you like the Philly Fringe Fest, here you’ll see some acts in their in­fancy and provide your sup­port of the city’s artist­ic com­munity.

Fri­day June 15

St. George Cath­ol­ic Church, on Ed­ge­mont and Ven­ango streets, will hold its an­nu­al sum­mer bazaar June 14-16 start­ing at 6 p.m. each night. There will be games of chance, shop­ping, food, a moon bounce and a dunk tank. For ques­tions, call 215-739-3102. ••

Sat­urday, June 16

Kick off the end of the school year and start of sum­mer with Rock to the Fu­ture’s 1st An­nu­al Rock the Block Party!

The event will take place June 16 from 1 p.m. un­til 6 p.m. on the 2500 block of Trenton Av­en­ue (St. Mi­chael’s Church - Trenton Av­en­ue between Cum­ber­land Street and E. Firth St.).

Fea­tur­ing live mu­sic from Jampa!, Rock to the Fu­ture, and more loc­al mu­si­cians, meet loc­al com­munity or­gan­iz­a­tions and loc­al busi­nesses, and sup­port loc­al artists and craft vendors!

This is a free, fam­ily-friendly event with something for every­one - food, games, and raffles! Bring a non-per­ish­able food item to donate to the food pantry and help your fel­low neigh­bors.

Monday, June 18

At 7 p.m. at Camp­bell Square park at Bel­grade Street and Al­legheny Av­en­ue, Port Rich­mond en­cour­ages you to “wave ‘em if you’re Pol­ish!” with a per­form­ance by the Pol­ish-Amer­ic­an string band, Babushka Power! Join the cel­eb­ra­tion at the park, and hear the an­nounce­ment of the win­ner of a Kindle Fire!

Tues­day, June 19

At the Port Rich­mond branch of the Free Lib­rary of Phil­adelphia (at 2987 Al­mond St.), the lib­rary is kick­ing off its Sum­mer Read­ing Pro­gram.

It runs through Au­gust 10th, with dif­fer­ent activ­it­ies each day of the week.

On Tues­days, it’s game day! Bring the kids to play a board game and meet new friends at the lib­rary from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The lib­rary will also give out weekly prizes to par­ti­cipants in its Sum­mer Read­ing Game. Find out more at the lib­rary! ••

Wed­nes­day, June 20

Also at the lib­rary (see above), The Phil­adelphia Eagles’ book mo­bile will vis­it at 10 a.m. The book mo­bile’s “Story­book Man” will read an ex­cit­ing story and dis­trib­ute a new, free book to all chil­dren.

Then, the lib­rary will have face paint­ing at 11 a.m. fol­lowed by wa­ter ice and pret­zels for all chil­dren who want to sign up for the lib­rary’s Sum­mer Read­ing Game.  ••
