Yards hates can­cer

On Fri­day, Ju­ly 27, Yards Brew­ing Com­pany, at 901 N. Delaware Ave., will throw a party to launch their new “Cape of Good Hope” beer as well as cel­eb­rate their team’s part in this year’s “The Dude Hates Can­cer” bowl­ing tour­na­ment, which raises funds for the Leuk­emia and Lymph­oma So­ci­ety.

Stop the Vi­ol­ence Walk

On Ju­ly 28 at 12 p.m., at 5th Street and Al­legheny Av­en­ue, a walk will be­gin in memory of Al­ex­an­der “Tito” Mar­tinez and all fallen vic­tims in the city.

The walk will con­tin­ue to Frank­ford Av­en­ue and Al­legheny Av­en­ue, where walk­ers will rally for safer streets. A cookout will be held at the rally; con­tact Ros­alind at 856-745-6045 to provide dona­tions. ••

AVI and you

The South Kens­ing­ton Com­munity Part­ners will present a “Com­munity Con­ver­sa­tion” re­gard­ing the city’s Ac­tu­al Value Ini­ti­at­ive (AVI) on Thursday, Ju­ly 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Con­cilio, 705 N. Frank­lin St., between Fair­mount Av­en­ue and Brown Street.

Spe­cial guests in­clude Tom Fer­rick and Neil Budde; re­fresh­ments will be served.

Top­ics up for dis­cus­sion are: how the city’s Ac­tu­al Value Ini­ti­at­ive and Homestead Ex­emp­tion will af­fect the prop­erty taxes paid by neigh­bor­hood homeown­ers in South/Old Kens­ing­ton, Lud­low, and parts of North­ern Liber­ties, Nor­ris Square and East/West Pop­lar; changes to Voter ID law, and up­com­ing (fall 2012) Ad­vis­ory Com­mit­tee elec­tions. ••

North­east Cath­ol­ic re­union

North­east Cath­ol­ic Alumni As­so­ci­ation will hold its 16th an­nu­al “Fal­cons Fun in the Sun” re­union for all alumni on Sat­urday, Au­gust 4.

It will be held at Light­house Pointe, Wild­wood N.J. from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Price is $25 per per­son, in ad­vance, which in­cludes draft beer, soda, wine, a buf­fet and mu­sic by the Buddy Starling Band.  Tick­ets may be ob­tained from the as­so­ci­ation, P.O. Sum­mer bas­ket­ball league

The Han­cock Re­cre­ation Cen­ter will be host­ing its an­nu­al sum­mer bas­ket­ball league. Chil­dren ages 13 and un­der and those 14 to 16 years old may par­ti­cip­ate. The league fee will be $100 per team, of which $50 will be re­fun­ded if your team does not for­feit any games.

Sean Daily me­mori­al sports tour­na­ment

The Port Rich­mond Ti­gers will spon­sor the 24th an­nu­al sports tour­na­ment on Fri­day, Sat­urday and Sunday, Ju­ly 27, 28 and 29.

Kon­rad Square flea mar­ket

The Friends of Kon­rad Square will host a flea mar­ket on Sat­urday, Ju­ly 28 at Kon­rad Square at Tulip and Dauph­in streets from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Any­one in­ter­ested in rent­ing a space should call Vicky at 215-426-9654. ••

Girl Scout troop lead­ers

Troop lead­ers needed to help run troops of all grades in Fishtown, Port Rich­mond and oth­er areas. 

Troop lead­ers work in part­ner­ship with girls with­in a spe­cif­ic grade level as they dis­cov­er them­selves, con­nect with oth­ers and take ac­tion to make the world a bet­ter place.

Help girls get ex­posed to new ex­per­i­ences through field trips, badges and more. Sup­port and train­ing are provided.
