Ac­tu­al Value Ini­ti­at­ive and you

The South Kens­ing­ton Com­munity Part­ners will present a “Com­munity Con­ver­sa­tion” re­gard­ing the city’s  Ac­tu­al Value Ini­ti­at­ive (AVI) on Thursday, Ju­ly 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Con­cilio, 705 N. Frank­lin St., between Fair­mount Av­en­ue and Brown Street.

Spe­cial guests in­clude Tom Fer­rick and Neil Budde; re­fresh­ments will be served.

Top­ics up for dis­cus­sion are: how the city’s Ac­tu­al Value Ini­ti­at­ive and Homestead Ex­emp­tion will af­fect the prop­erty taxes paid by neigh­bor­hood homeown­ers in South/Old Kens­ing­ton, Lud­low, and parts of North­ern Liber­ties, Nor­ris Square and East/West Pop­lar; changes to Voter ID law, and up­com­ing (Fall 2012) Ad­vis­ory Com­mit­tee elec­tions. ••

North­east Cath­ol­ic re­union

North­east Cath­ol­ic Alumni As­so­ci­ation will hold its 16th an­nu­al Fal­cons Fun in the Sun re­union for all alumni on Sat­urday, Au­gust 4.

It will be held at Light­house Pointe, Wild­wood N.J. from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Price is $25 per per­son, in ad­vance, which in­cludes draft beer, soda, wine, a buf­fet and mu­sic by the Buddy Starling Band.

St. Adal­bert bazaar

St. Adal­bert Par­ish’s sum­mer bazaar will be held Thursday through Sat­urday, Au­gust 2 through Au­gust 4, be­gin­ning at 6 p.m. each night on the par­ish grounds - 2645 E. Al­legheny Ave.

Treat your­self to some sweets, browse the flea mar­ket, en­joy homemade Pol­ish food, and dance and en­joy the live en­ter­tain­ment, in­clud­ing Pol­ish Amer­ic­an String Band on Thursday, a polka trio band on Fri­day and con­tin­ent­al Pol­ish mu­sic Sat­urday. ••

LSH seeks art teach­er

The seni­or cen­ter of the Luther­an Set­tle­ment House, at 1340 Frank­ford Ave., would like to re­cruit a re­tired art teach­er for its Tues­day morn­ing class. Sum­mer bas­ket­ball league

The Han­cock Re­cre­ation Cen­ter will be host­ing its an­nu­al sum­mer bas­ket­ball league. Chil­dren ages 13 and un­der and those 14 to 16 years old may par­ti­cip­ate.

The league fee will be $100 per team, of which $50 will be re­fun­ded if your team does not for­feit any games. Of­fi­cial league bas­ket­ball shirts and a coach shirt will be provided for each team mem­ber. Each team will pay its own ref­er­ee’s fee.

Sean Daily sports tour­na­ment

The Port Rich­mond Ti­gers will spon­sor the 24th an­nu­al Sean Daily me­mori­al sports tour­na­ment on Fri­day, Sat­urday and Sunday, Ju­ly 27, 28 and 29.

Fea­tured events will in­clude men’s and wo­men’s soft­ball, bas­ket­ball, soc­cer (all ages) and wo­men’s vol­ley­ball. All events will take place at Co­hox Play­ground (Ce­dar and Ann streets).

St. Anne’s pro­duce vouch­ers

St. Anne’s Seni­or Cen­ter will be dis­trib­ut­ing pro­duce vouch­ers through the Seni­or Farm­ers’ Mar­ket Nu­tri­tion Pro­gram. You will re­ceive four $5 vouch­ers that will be val­id un­til Nov. 30, 2012.

Act­ive cen­ter mem­bers can pick up vouch­ers through Ju­ly 20 from 10 a.m. un­til noon. Non-mem­bers can re­ceive vouch­ers on Ju­ly 18 from 2 to 4 p.m..

You must be 60 years old by Decem­ber 31, 2012 (show proof of age), live in Phil­adelphia with proof of ad­dress, and meet cer­tain in­come re­quire­ments.

Justice for Wayne walk

At 10 a.m. on Ju­ly 28, there will be a march in memory of Wayne El­liss. He was shot and killed while on his way home on Ju­ly 28, 2002, at Bel­grade Street and Frank­ford Av­en­ue.

In the 10 years since his death the fam­ily claims they have no an­swers. The march hopes to break the si­lence. They seek 100 or more people to join in the walk. Every­one is wel­come. The walk will be­gin at Club Deco on Front and Spring Garden streets and head to Frank­ford Av­en­ue at Bel­grade Street.

It costs $20 per per­son to par­ti­cip­ate in the walk and you will re­ceive a brace­let and tee shirt. There will be a block party and beef-and-beer af­ter­wards start­ing at 3 p.m., plus a DJ. It will cost $30 to at­tend the beef-and-beer if you don’t par­ti­cip­ate in the me­mori­al walk. All money raised will be donated to the AOH Fishtown Di­vi­sion 51.

The fam­ily will be selling shirts, brace­lets, raffle tick­ets and bas­kets. They still need dona­tions, and every little bit helps. Come sup­port a great cause. For info call Amy El­liss at 267-339-1133 or Wayne El­liss Sr. at 215-913-6437. ••

PAL selling Phil­lies tick­ets

The Po­lice Ath­let­ic League of Phil­adelphia and the Ju­ni­or Base­ball Fed­er­a­tion cel­eb­rate their 64th year of part­ner­ship in rais­ing funds to sup­port in­ner-city youth by mak­ing Phil­lies tick­ets avail­able for pur­chase.

Forty per­cent of each tick­et pur­chase is donated back to PAL. Tick­ets can be pur­chased at: PAL Headquar­ters, 2524 E. Clear­field St.

Buy tick­ets for the fol­low­ing games: Monday, Au­gust 6, vs. Braves, 7:05 p.m.; Wed­nes­day, Au­gust 22, vs. Reds, 7:05 p.m.; Thursday, Au­gust 23 vs. Reds, 7:05 p.m.; Wed­nes­day, Septem­ber 12, vs. Mar­lins, 4:05 p.m.; Tues­day, Septem­ber 25 vs. Na­tion­als, 7:05 p.m. Tick­ets are $30 each.

Join St. Anne’s choir

The mu­sic pro­gram at St. Anne’s Church, loc­ated at 2328 E. Le­high Ave., is look­ing for chor­al sing­ers to join the church’s fest­iv­al choir. The choir will sing at the Sol­emn Clos­ing of the Novena to St. Anne on Thursday, Ju­ly 26 at 7 p.m. The choir re­hearses on Wed­nes­day nights from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at St. Anne’s. Mar­garet “Peg” Mc­Cook sports tour­na­ment

The tour­na­ment will be held Ju­ly 20, 21, and 22 at Cione Play­ground at Le­high and Ara­mingo av­en­ues and at Co­hox Play­ground at Ce­dar and Cam­bria streets. Pro­ceeds be­ne­fit the Amer­ic­an Can­cer So­ci­ety as well as schol­ar­ships for stu­dents en­ter­ing high school.

In the tour­na­ment, there will be: men’s and wo­men’s soft­ball, bas­ket­ball and soc­cer for $125; youth soc­cer for $100; youth bas­ket­ball for $75, horse­shoes for $25 per throw­er, plus a 5K run on Ju­ly 21 for $25.

Brides­burg flea mar­ket

Tues­day, Au­gust 7 at 10 a.m. at the cen­ter, 4625 Rich­mond St. The cen­ter does not rent tables. If you would like to donate items for the cen­ter to sell, bring items to the cen­ter on or be­fore Fri­day, Au­gust 3.

All pro­ceeds be­ne­fit the chil­dren’s activ­it­ies of the cen­ter. ••
