Bustleton Ave. Wawa robbed at gunpoint

StartFragment

A robber with a small handgun and possibly a nicotine habit stuck up a Wawa store in Castor Gardens early Sunday, Philadelphia police said.

The bandit made off with an undisclosed amount of cash and 36 packs of Newport and Newport 100s cigarettes, according to Officer Christine O’Brien, a police department spokeswoman.

Police were called to the convenience store on the 6400 block of Bustleton Ave. just after 6 a.m. for a robbery in progress. A 20-year-old male cashier told them that a man had walked up to him, placed a demand note on the counter and pulled an “automatic-style” handgun from his jacket. The suspect held the weapon at his side and ordered the clerk to open the register and stuff the cash into a bag, along with cigarettes.

After the clerk complied, the robber fled on foot southbound on Bustleton Avenue. No injuries were reported.

The robber was described as Hispanic with a light complexion and light-colored eyes, 30 to 35 years old, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds. He wore a gray zipper jacket with unknown markings on the left side, a black hoodie and gloves.
