Rilling’s Bakery is history

Rilling’s Bakery, at 2990 Southampton Road, has closed, ending a 76-year run at various locations in Philadelphia.

The 20,000-square-foot Southampton Road location opened in 1984. The Rilling family sold it in 1993, and the new owners kept the name. There are signs in the windows and on the lawn that read, “Rilling’s Bakery wants to Thank You!! Your Patronage & Loyalty over the years is sincerely appreciated!!!”

The original family owns Rilling’s Bucks County Bakery, located at 868 E. Street Road in Warminster, in the Davisville Shopping Center. It’s been open since 1981.

German immigrants Willy and Martha (Schmid) Rilling opened their first bakery in 1936 at 26th Street and Girard Avenue. Rilling’s Bakery relocated to 6635 Castor Ave. in 1939. Later locations included 7328 Frankford Ave., 11704 Bustleton Ave. and 8756 Frankford Ave. ••
