Plenty of civic action

A num­ber of loc­al com­munity groups are set­ting agen­das for meet­ings this month.

The Frank­ford Civic As­so­ci­ation will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, in the second-floor con­fer­ence room of Aria Health’s Frank­ford cam­pus. Mem­bers will con­sider a zon­ing vari­ance re­quest for a va­cant prop­erty at 1709 Gilling­ham St. The land is zoned res­id­en­tial and the own­er wants to fence it and use it to store cars, said Pete Specos, the as­so­ci­ation’s pres­id­ent and zon­ing of­ficer.

The East Tor­res­dale Civic As­so­ci­ation will meet on Monday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m., at Liberty Evan­gel­ic­al Free Church, Linden Av­en­ue and Mil­nor Street.

The Holmes­burg Civic As­so­ci­ation will meet on Tues­day, Dec. 11, at 7:15 p.m., at Holmes­burg Re­cre­ation Cen­ter, at Rhawn and Dit­man streets.

Also on Dec. 11, the Somer­ton Civic As­so­ci­ation will meet at 7 p.m. at Walk­er Lodge 306, 1290 Southamp­ton Road.

The Burholme Com­munity Town Watch and Civic As­so­ci­ation will meet on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 7 p.m., at United Meth­od­ist Church of the Re­deem­er, at 1128 Cottman Ave. (at Lawndale Av­en­ue). The guest speak­er will be City Coun­cil­wo­man Maria Quinones-Sanc­hez (D-7th dist.). Of­fi­cials from the 2nd Po­lice Dis­trict will be in at­tend­ance. There will be a dis­cus­sion about Burholme Pride Day.

Take Back Your Neigh­bor­hood will meet on Monday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m., at Max My­ers Play­ground, at 1601 Heller­man St.

Lawn­crest Com­munity As­so­ci­ation will meet on Tues­day, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m., at St. Wil­li­am par­ish hall, at Argyle and Rob­bins streets.

The Great­er Bustleton Civic League will meet at 7 p.m. on Wed­nes­day, Dec. 19, at the Amer­ic­an Her­it­age Fed­er­al Cred­it Uni­on Car­riage House, 2060 Red Li­on Road. Zon­ing is­sues fre­quently dom­in­ate the league’s ses­sions, and mem­bers are sure to dis­cuss the group’s ap­peal of a re­cent Zon­ing Board of Ad­just­ment de­cision that will al­low man­u­fac­tur­ing at 9997 Hal­de­man Ave., a prop­erty with res­id­en­tial zon­ing. On Thursday, Dec. 20, the Up­per Holmes­burg Civic As­so­ci­ation will meet to dis­cuss a zon­ing ap­plic­a­tion for a Tor­res­dale Av­en­ue apart­ment build­ing. The group will also hold its an­nu­al Christ­mas party. The meet­ing starts at 7 p.m. at St. Domin­ic’s Mari­an Hall, 8532 Frank­ford Ave.

The Rhawn­hurst Nat­ur­ally Oc­cur­ring Re­tire­ment Com­munity (NORC) will meet on Thursday, Dec. 27, at noon, at Con­greg­a­tions of Ner Zedek, at 7520 Bustleton Ave. 

The Mill­brook Civic As­so­ci­ation’s Decem­ber meet­ing has been can­celed. The next ses­sion will be at 7 p.m. on Tues­day, Jan. 29, at the Cal­vary Ath­let­ic As­so­ci­ation on Deer­path Lane. 

The Park­wood Civic As­so­ci­ation also will not meet in Decem­ber or Feb­ru­ary, but mem­bers will get to­geth­er at 7:30 p.m. on Wed­nes­day, Jan. 16, at St. An­selm’s Church Hall on Dunks Ferry Road. 

The Nor­mandy Civic As­so­ci­ation is an­oth­er group that will skip meet­ing in Decem­ber. Nor­mandy’s mem­bers next will meet at 7 p.m. on Tues­day, Jan. 15, at the Nor­com Com­munity Cen­ter, 10980 Nor­com Road. ••
