Though the store’s only been open on Richmond Street since December, Sweets & Treats has quickly gained a significant following as a sweet spot to pick up some treats to give as a gift—or keep for yourself.
Co-owner Wayne Bullock said he believes it’s the unique candy offerings and custom gift baskets that make the store stand out.
In fact, he said his shop is one of the few places where locals can get Turkish taffy and “flying saucers”: candy-filled pouches made of sweetened unleavened bread. Customers can also get a taste of Hershey’s ice cream for a cool $1 per scoop.
As a new resident of the community—he moved with his family to Port Richmond to help open the store—Bullock said the area has been welcoming, and he hopes to return neighbors’ kindness by providing an open, friendly atmosphere at his shop.
“When we first looked at the neighborhood, we thought, ‘It’s all families, but they have nowhere fun to go,’” he said. “The neighborhood has been great. Everyone has been welcoming.”
Since the shop has opened, they have added an ice cream cooler and a counter for Asher’s brand chocolates.
Bullock’s favorite part of working in the River Wards? The people, he said.
“We have people come in from Fishtown. They walk all the way over here with strollers and everything,” he said. “It’s just been so much fun.”
