Pennypack car accident claims second victim

A second eld­erly wo­man has died as a res­ult of a vi­ol­ent one-vehicle crash in Pennypack Park on Oct. 10.

The Phil­adelphia Med­ic­al Ex­am­iner’s Of­fice has con­firmed the iden­tit­ies of the vic­tims as Shir­ley Dougherty, 81, and Eliza­beth Jones, 71. The wo­men were sis­ters-in-law and lived to­geth­er on Dis­ston Street near Ox­ford Av­en­ue in Lawndale.

Ac­cord­ing to Phil­adelphia po­lice, Dougherty was driv­ing a 2006 Lin­coln Town Car south­bound on the 8500 block of Krewstown Road at about 1:30 p.m. when she lost con­trol of the vehicle on a sharp turn. Jones was a pas­sen­ger.

The car veered in­to the north­bound lane, plowed through a guard­rail and fell more than 50 feet down an em­bank­ment be­fore land­ing on its roof in Pennypack Creek.

Dougherty was pro­nounced dead at the scene, while Jones died that night at Aria Health Tor­res­dale. Their in­jur­ies were not spe­cified.

Po­lice con­tin­ue to in­vest­ig­ate the cause of the crash.

Ac­cord­ing to pub­lished re­ports, among the wo­men’s activ­it­ies they vo­lun­teered in the Fox Chase Can­cer Cen­ter gift shop. ••
