Kidney donor needed for local man, 19

An unexpected complication with the original donor, Kevin Brighter’s mother, leaves the family searching for a kidney replacement.

In last week’s Times, a story chronicled how Torresdale’s Maura Brighter was scheduled to donate one of her kidneys on May 16 to her 19-year-old son, Kevin.

However, it was discovered last week that an antibody would have rejected the kidney, and the surgery was canceled.

The family is desperate to find a donor for Kevin, a junior at La Salle University.

Kevin was born on Aug. 27, 1997, and diagnosed with kidney disease. He was able to live a life free from dialysis for nearly three years.

The youngster was listed for a kidney transplant shortly before his third birthday, and both of his parents were tested to be donors and found to be matches.

Kevin Brighter Sr. was the donor in July 2000.

Doctors told the family that young Kevin could live with the kidney for up to 20 years.

Kevin’s kidney was healthy until this past Christmas, when he began to experience significant swelling and had to go on dialysis because his kidney was failing.

To be considered as a donor, fill out the form here.

On the form, indicate that a donor kidney would be for Kevin Brighter.

Kevin is blood type B-positive.

Donors must be blood types B or O. They must be at least 21 years old, not have diabetes or heart issues and be in reasonably good shape.
