Lawncrest ready for Fourth celebration

The 96th Lawn­crest Fourth of Ju­ly cel­eb­ra­tion will take place Monday at the Lawn­crest Re­cre­ation Cen­ter, at Rising Sun Av­en­ue and Comly Street.

The theme is Com­munity Spir­it.

The rain date is Sat­urday, Ju­ly 9.

A parade will start at 9 a.m., fea­tur­ing string bands, armed ser­vice or­gan­iz­a­tions, an­tique cars, com­munity groups and churches, floats and loc­al sports team mas­cots. The parade grand mar­shals will be John J. Riehl, own­er of Rings Phar­macy, and Evelyn Fla­herty, pres­id­ent of the Friends of Lawn­crest Lib­rary.

An Amer­ic­an flag-rais­ing ce­re­mony will fol­low the parade.

There will be games, prizes and T-shirt sales all day. T-shirts are also for sale at the Wawa store at Rising Sun and Long­shore av­en­ues. Raffle draw­ings will be held at 4:30 p.m.

Oth­er activ­it­ies in­clude a flea mar­ket (8 a.m. to 6 p.m.), food court (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), clas­sic car show (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), chil­dren’s rides (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.), live mu­sic­al en­ter­tain­ment (11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and bingo (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.).

There will be a fire­works dis­play at dusk.

The Phil­adelphia Prot­est­ant Home, at 6500 Tabor Road, will host two con­certs this sum­mer, and the pub­lic is in­vited.

The Daisy Jug Band will per­form on Thursday, Ju­ly 21. The Midiri Broth­ers or­ches­tra will en­ter­tain on Thursday, Aug. 25.

Both shows start at 7 p.m. and will take place in the PPH’s air-con­di­tioned so­cial hall.

The crowd held a mo­ment of si­lence for Robert Bar­rilli Jr., who died June 2 from in­jur­ies suffered in a mo­tor­cycle ac­ci­dent. He was 29. His fath­er is an aide to City Coun­cil­man Bri­an O’Neill (R-10th dist.).
