Philadelphia girl killed
on railroad tracks
A SEPTA commuter train struck and killed a 16-year-old Philadelphia girl as she walked along the railroad tracks south of Lawndale Station on Sunday night.
Authorities in Montgomery County withheld the identity of the girl pending formal identification and notification of her family. Cheltenham Township detectives are handling the investigation because the mishap occurred just outside the city limits, near East Comly Street and Newtown Avenue.
Philadelphia police received a 911 call at about 10:13 p.m. from witnesses, who claimed that the girl was walking northbound on the tracks when struck by the southbound train. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cheltenham police and SEPTA provided no explanation as to why the girl was on the tracks or who may have accompanied her. Call police at 215-885-1600 to report information about the incident.
