Yost service slated
A memorial service will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Cathedral Basilica of SS Peter and Paul for Les Yost, a longtime Torresdale resident and former president of the International Association of Firefighters Local 22.
The cathedral is located at 18th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Yost, 68, died June 29 in an assisted-living facility in North Carolina.
He had suffered from Alzheimers disease for about a year.
He is survived by his wife, three children and three grandchildren.
The family held a private service in North Carolina.
Yost joined the Philadelphia Fire Department in 1959.
In 1981, he was elected Local 22s recording secretary.
He became vice president two years later and defeated incumbent John McMenamin for the presidency in 1987.
After serving six two-year terms, Yost declined to run again in 1999.
He returned to active duty at Ladder 1, at 1541-47 Parrish St.
In 2001, he rejoined union leadership by winning election as a trustee.
He was elected vice president in 2003 and retired from the department on Jan. 1, 2004, but remained as vice president until last year.
