Air conditioner stolen
from roof of Mayfair business
Burglars in an apparent hunt for valuable scrap metal stole a commercial air-conditioning unit from the roof of a local beauty salon during the Independence Day holiday weekend.
According to an employee of BeautyWorx, at 7242 Frankford Ave., the owner of the business, Lois Burak, arrived at the shop on July 8 to discover the missing equipment.
Other nearby businesses, including a formal-wear shop, a barbershop and a law firm, also were targeted, said Nettie Mason, a BeautyWorx hairdresser.
The business operators are at a loss to figure out how the bandits were able to get the heavy air conditioners down from the roofs undetected. A crane will be used to install a new one at BeautyWorx at an estimated cost of $5,000 to $8,000, Mason said.
Police are investigating the crimes, said Capt. Jack McGinnis of Northeast Detectives.
According to the detective commander, the price of scrap metal, particularly copper, is on the rise. Air conditioners contain copper.
