Northeast Rockers donate
earnings to breast-cancer coalition

The Northeast Rockers girls AAU basketball club presented the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) with a $4,000 donation on June 24. Several Rockers players gathered at Washington Savings Bank on Comly Road to be a part of the presentation.
The girls presented the donation to Dolores Magro, director of patient advocacy and conference development for PBCC. The money came from the Rockers’ annual Jamfest Basketball Tournament held in April.
The squad raised the money through tournament entry fees, T-shirt sales and concession-stand proceeds. More than 100 teams participated in the two-day tournament, held at numerous gyms in the city.
While it was the 10th anniversary of the Jamfest, this year’s tournament had a “think pink” theme. In an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer, the Rockers players played in special pink uniforms, and coaches wore pink shirts. The officials used pink whistles while officiating the games; other teams and spectators also had been encouraged to wear pink.
The Rockers, a non-profit AAU basketball club for girls ages 8 to 17, decided to team up with PBCC because they wanted to donate to a local charity assisting the effort to find a cure for breast cancer. PBCC represents, supports and serves breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania through educational programming, legislative advocacy and outreach initiatives.
