Slain Philadelphia Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski may not have been stationed at the 2nd Police District, but his presence in the district was well known. He made his home there.
"Were all going to be at a loss with his passing," 2nd District Capt. Michael McCarrick told the crowd during the 2nd Police District Advisory Councils May meeting.
The group held a moment of silence in honor of Liczbinski, who was just days shy of his 40th birthday when he was gunned down following a daytime robbery at a bank in Port Richmond.
McCarrick shared brief reflections on Liczbinski, a Burholme resident, who was laid to rest May 9 at Resurrection Cemetery in Bensalem.
McCarrick praised Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey for words he delivered during the funeral service. Liczbinski is the first Philadelphia officer to be killed since Ramsey took office in January.
"When he speaks, his words kind of hit you close," McCarrick said of the commissioner.
Paraphrasing Ramseys statements, McCarrick said, "He (Liczbinski) is not a hero because he passed but for what he did on a daily basis."
McCarrick reiterated what many officers have said in recent times that the stress put on city police is great, and they have one of the hardest jobs out there.
"We are outnumbered; the demands that are placed on us are great," he noted.
In light of the recent tragic event, McCarrick urged everyone to show support for the police department and the Liczbinski family.
"We wish to extend our thanks and our continuing prayers for his family," he said.
