Mayfair May Fair
Rain and a Flyers game kept attendance down at last weeks Mayfair Civic Association meeting, but the group discussed plenty of upcoming neighborhood happenings.
A newly reorganized Mayfair Business Association is sponsoring a Mayfair May Fair on Saturday, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine. The event will kick off at Frankford and Cottman avenues with a disc jockey.
All day, merchants will offer sidewalk sales along Frankford Avenue from Rhawn Street to Harbison Avenue. There will also be a scavenger hunt, with the winner earning a gift certificate to participating businesses.
Other highlights include pony rides and a dunk tank at the Philly Soft Pretzel Factory and a book and bake sale at Holmesburg Library. The trucks at the fire station at Frankford and Hartel avenues will also be on display.
The Philadelphia Parking Authority will provide free parking on Frankford Avenue and side streets.

The Philadelphia Police Department and the 15th Police District Advisory Council will hold their second annual community day on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Abraham Lincoln High School parking lot at Rowland and Bleigh avenues. There will be a Moonbounce, clowns, live music, soft pretzels and giveaways.
The Mayfair Community Development Corporation will hold a beer-and-beer on Saturday, from 7 to 11 p.m., at the John M. Perzel Community Center, at 2990 St. Vincent St.
Tickets cost $30 in advance and $35 at the door and include draft beer, wine, soda, dinner and disc jockey.
Proceeds will go to a childrens artistic tile program that will decorate the lobby of the Devon Theater of the Performing Arts, which could open by the end of the year.
Guests will be able to look at architectural layouts and conceptual drawings of the theater. They will also view plans to beautify Frankford Avenue from Cottman to Harbison avenues. The project includes trees, sidewalks, crosswalks, planted medians and banners. Call 215-332-4414.
The Perzel Community Center will host a public meeting on Thursday, May 29, at 7 p.m. to give the public an update on construction of a new Abraham Lincoln High School, scheduled to open in September 2009.
o The newly formed Mayfair-Lower Holmesburg Town Watch will patrol the areas between the Delaware River and Rowland Avenue, including Abraham Lincoln High School, and between Cottman Avenue and Rhawn Street.
The patrols will be combined with those of Tacony Town Watch. The group is looking for new members, age 18 and older, who can patrol by car, bike or foot or keep a watch on their block. Most patrols are on weekends. Individuals will be trained and certified.
Anyone who has committed a felony or is wanted on a bench warrant is not eligible to join.

Mayfair Civic Association will meet again on Tuesday, May 27, at 8 p.m. at the Perzel Community Center. The group usually meets on the last Monday of the month, but that date falls on Memorial Day.
