Tree Tenders

After their inaugural and successful tree planting on March 15, the Northeast Tree Tenders are already planning for its fall 2008 and spring 2009 plantings.
The Tree Tenders are looking for homeowners in the Northeast who would like to request a street or yard tree for their homes.
Removal of existing trees and surrounding sidewalk are free to residents, thanks to a tax subsidy. Tree Tenders ask only for a $15 donation per tree toward planting expenses. By contrast, private contractors can charge $400 for the same job.
Residents should complete the "Request to Plant a Tree" application and return it by May 1 to: Tree Tenders, 7120 Oakland St., Philadelphia, PA 19149.
For an application, call 215-694-9607 or 215-331-3496, or e-mail NETreeTenders@aol.com.
Tree Tenders is a program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society intended to add much-needed trees to the Philadelphia streetscape.
Residents may request a curbside tree or a yard tree, but yard tree locations must be visible from the street. Backyard trees are not supplied.
Tree Tenders selects species that will provide shade to the block, improve air quality, reduce storm water runoff, buffer noise, provide a habitat for birds, beautify the block and improve property values, but won’t destroy the sidewalk. ••
