Cleanup, arts festival
set for Rising Sun Avenue
A newly formed Rising Sun Avenue Business Association is planning a cleanup on the 7200 block of the avenue on Saturday, May 17.
Christine Houck, a business owner on that block, is planning an arts festival on that day.
Houck and Matt Taubenberger, an aide to state Rep. George Kenney (R-170th dist.) and Republican candidate for Kenneys seat, are organizing the meetings to strengthen the organization.
In other news from that block, a Crown Fried Chicken store is planned for the Purple Orchid II, at 7271 Rising Sun Ave. The go-go bar has been closed since Aug. 15, 2002, when police raided it.
A bar manager was later convicted on cocaine-related charges. Police found marijuana, steroids, prescription Xanax and cash in an office.
Also, a foster care agency has bought the property at 7210-20 Rising Sun Ave. that is the former home of Ruhlings Seafood restaurant, which closed in December 2005.
Those business-related issues and other matters will be discussed at the next meeting of the Burholme Community Town Watch and Civic Association.
The group will meet on Thursday, May 8, at 7 p.m. at United Methodist Church of the Redeemer, at Cottman and Lawndale avenues. The following months meeting will be on June 12 at the same time and location.
