Editorial for April 3, 2008 edition:

Do your part

With all the pre-Pennsylvania primary hoopla and the nation’s political radar set firmly on Philadelphia these days, including frequent visits from superstars Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and national and foreign journalists, Saturday will be an absolutely awesome time for all good men and women, boys and girls, to help make Philly not just the City of Brotherly Love but the Beautiful City of Brotherly Love.
All it takes is answering Mayor Michael Nutter’s call for participation in what the mayor is describing as the biggest citywide cleanup in Philadelphia, this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
It’s no secret that Philadelphia has way more than its fair share of dirt and grime, so any able-bodied Philadelphia resident and merchant who has a little time to spare on Saturday who does not lend a helping hand in the cleanup effort AND who is one of those people who often complains about how dirty the city is, should hang his head in shame. It’s not too late to get information on how and where you can help. Go to www.phillycleanup.com on the Internet or call 215-683-CLEAN.
Give Philadelphia extra reasons to shine in the national spotlight. Let the world know that Philly is more than just cheesesteaks, Rocky, MOVE and murders in the subway concourse.
There is no reason the intensity cannot match that of the big volunteer summit in 1997. Give Mayor Nutter and all of Philadelphia the benefit of the doubt. Help clean up your city. Philadelphia doesn’t have to be Filthydelphia any longer.
In the meantime, if you live, work or travel in the city and you throw cigarette butts out the car window within city limits, cut it out. Please. ••
