Military Matters

Army Reserve Pfc. Alexander Dubskiy, Army Pvt. Zoe Narmah and Army Reserve Pvt. Shawn P. Harris have graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldiers studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.
Dubskiy, the son of Georgiy Dubskiy, graduated from George Washington High School in 2000.
Narmah, the niece of Ballah Narmah of Philadelphia and daughter of Betty Narmah of Willingboro, N.J., is a 2006 graduate of Willingboro High School.
Harris is the son of Ted Boatwright and Wanda Harris, both of Philadelphia.

Marine Corps Pfc. Jeffrey J. Nemo, son of Rosemarie Nemo of Philadelphia, and Marine Corps Reserve Pfc. Alexandra M. Connell, daughter of Darlene L. and Charles M. Connell of Philadelphia, recently graduated from the Bulk Fuel Specialist Course.
During the course at the U.S. Army Quarter Master School, Fort Lee, Va., students receive instruction on the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of fuel handling units and accessory equipment.
Students also test petroleum products to evaluate the quality used in amphibious assault fuel handling systems.
Nemo, a 1998 graduate of Father Judge High School, joined the Marine Corps in June 2007.
Connell joined the Marine Corps Reserve in June 2007.

Navy Seaman Recruit Mike A. Rodriguez, son of Neri Figueroa of Philadelphia and Miguel A. Rodriguez of Youngstown, Ohio; Navy Seaman Recruit Lerenta D. Fairy; Navy Seaman Brittiny Gilliard, daughter of Gina G. Gilliard of Florence, S. C. and John F. Gilliard of Philadelphia; and Navy Seaman Apprentice Jonathan S. Kerekes, son of Jeannie L. Austin of Philadelphia and Frank B. Smith of Bensalem, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
During the eight-week program, they completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.
An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.
The capstone event of boot camp is "Battle Stations." This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. "Battle Stations" is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly "Navy" flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a sailor.
Rodriguez is a 2007 graduate of Community Academy of Philadelphia High School.
Fairy is a 2006 graduate of George Washington High School.
Gilliard is a 2005 graduate of Hartsville High School of Hartsville, S.C.
Kerekes is a 2004 graduate of George Washington High School.
Also, Navy Reserve Seaman Apprentice Devin M. Kiker, daughter of Donna M. Bellina of Philadelphia, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training and was meritoriously promoted to her current rank at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Kiker is a 2005 graduate of Archbishop Carroll High School in Radnor, Pa.

Air Force Airmen Evelyn Y. Gonzalez and Adrian A. Torres have graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
During the six weeks of training, they studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.
In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
The daughter of David Goldstein of Philadelphia, Gonzalez is a 2002 graduate of Northeast High School.
Torres, the son of Carmen Aponte and nephew of Audrey Kelly, both of Philadelphia, is a 2007 graduate of Swenson High School.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.
Rubio is the son of Adrian Rubio of Carver Street in Philadelphia, and Branilda Rubio of Willingboro, N.J.
