Watch out for scam
artists in Somerton
Due to the winter storm on Feb. 12, the Somerton Civic Association postponed several items of business at its monthly general membership meeting. The meeting went ahead in abbreviated fashion, although turnout was light due to the icy conditions outside, according to SCA president Mary Jane Hazell.
As a result, the group tabled possible votes on zoning applications for a proposed check cashing business at Bustleton Avenue and Byberry Road, along with a proposed day care facility near Red Lion Road and Sandmayer Lane.
Two political candidates addressed the meeting, Hazell said. Brendan Boyle is a Democrat running for the state House seat to be vacated by the retiring Republican George Kenney. John Farley is a Republican hoping to unseat incumbent state Sen. Mike Stack, a Democrat.
Capt. Joe Zaffino, commander of the Philadelphia Police Departments 7th district, warned residents about a recent series of crimes in which men have been posing as Philadelphia Water Department employees to gain access to local homes. Once inside, the crooks steal cash, jewelry and other valuables from usually elderly victims.
Zaffino instructed residents to be suspicious of people who knock on their doors claiming to be utility workers and asking to come inside. The scam artists wear clothing resembling those worn by utility workers. Some carry fake IDs, too. Residents can report suspicious activity immediately by calling 911.
