House fire claims
85-year-old woman

Members of the Philadelphia Fire Department’s Engine 46 and Ladder 20 companies on Tuesday afternoon distributed smoke alarms to residents of Pennypack Woods following the death of an 85-year-old woman in a fatal house fire there early Sunday.
The blaze began on the 3800 block of Oak Drive at 12:50 a.m., said Chief William Dell, a fire department spokesman.
Firefighters battled flames in the two-story wood-frame home for about 20 minutes before declaring the blaze under control, Dell said.
Medics took the female occupant to Frankford Hospital-Torresdale with burns to her face and chest. She died at the hospital.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation by the fire marshal on Tuesday, Dell said.
In addition to distributing and installing smoke alarms, firefighters handed out fire prevention materials in the neighborhood surrounding the fire scene. ••
