Second suspect arrested
in murder case
Philadelphia police on Monday arrested a second teen suspect in last weeks home-invasion murder at a Far Northeast apartment complex.
Omar Moses, 18, of the 1400 block of Riverside Drive, surrendered to authorities while accompanied by his attorney on Monday morning. Moses and an alleged accomplice, Jameel Randall, 16, of the 12000 block of Sweetbriar Road, face murder and robbery charges.
Members of the police departments Homicide Fugitive Squad captured Randall on the 4200 block of N. Front St. on Jan. 24, one day after the killing. He allegedly was carrying $800 cash that had been stolen during the heist.
The crime occurred on Jan. 23 at about 8:30 p.m. at the St. Ives Apartments, along Woodhaven Road between Academy and Thornton roads. Moses, who lives in the complex, and Randall were among about five males who entered a building on the 900 block of Riverside Drive, went to a third-floor apartment and robbed several occupants at gunpoint.
One of the intruders allegedly shot Ralph Hibner, 50, of Kensington, once in the abdomen as Hibner attempted to flee. Hibner collapsed in a hallway just outside the apartment and died at about 2 a.m. at Frankford Hospital, Torresdale Campus.
Hibners 22-year-old nephew lives with a girlfriend and their 2-year-old son in the apartment where the robbery and shooting occurred, police said. Moses and Randall allegedly gained access to the building when someone opened a security door for them. The victims knew at least one of the robbers, police said.
Once inside, the bandits propped open the security door so that several other accomplices could enter. Police have not named any other suspects.
Detectives believe that Moses and Randall targeted the apartment because they knew that the residents kept a large sum of money there.
No other injuries were reported.
Though 16, Randall has been charged as an adult. He was scheduled for a Jan. 30 preliminary hearing. A hearing date for Moses had not been set as the Northeast Times went to press.
