Perzels son
gets new trial date
The assault trial of Sam Perzel, the teenage son of state Rep. and former House Speaker John Perzel (R-172nd dist.), was continued last week.
Perzel, 18, had been scheduled to be in a Criminal Justice Center courtroom on Dec. 27 to face assault charges involving a Philadelphia police officer.
The trial was pushed back to Feb. 15, according to Assistant District Attorney Jill Fertel.
Perzel, of the 7800 block of Brous Ave. in Lexington Park, faces misdemeanor charges of simple assault, resisting arrest, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct stemming from an incident on Nov. 18 of last year.
The teen was arrested in the early-morning hours near Second and Tasker streets in South Philadelphia.
Officers from the 3rd Police District responded to reports of fights involving some of the 50-plus people gathered on the street.
At a preliminary hearing in late November, Officer Melissa Curcio testified that she ordered Perzel to leave the scene. She said he refused the order and that she attempted to place him under arrest.
The officer testified that Perzel said, "Get off of me," and hit her in the face. She and a fellow officer eventually subdued and arrested him.
At the preliminary hearing, a Municipal Court judge threw out a charge of aggravated assault.
Sam Perzel is the youngest of John and Sheryl Perzels four sons.
