Lt. John Moroney stood in for Capt. Frank Bachmayer, commander of the 15th Police District, to recognize Steven Ruddy and Anthony Manes as the November Officers of the Month for their apprehension of three suspects in a Nov. 15 armed robbery on the 4200 block of Knorr St.
The defendants were charged with numerous offenses, including robbery, violations of the Uniform Firearms Act, simple assault, theft and criminal conspiracy.
Moroney was happy to present the awards for the captain, who arrived later after attending an event at the district’s curfew center, because he had gone through the Police Academy with Officer Manes’ father.
In addition to a plaque, the officers were presented with City Council citations and gift cards from the Mayfair Community Development Corp.
When Bachmayer arrived, he updated PDAC members on the status of crime in the 15th. Violent crime was down 7 percent for the year, he said, while property crime was down 5 percent and quality-of-life arrests had increased by more than 50 percent.
Charles Ramsey, hired by Mayor-elect Michael Nutter to be the city’s next police commissioner, visited roll call at the 2nd and 15th districts last week, Bachmayer told PDAC members.
"He looks forward to working with community groups and the officers," Bachmayer said.
The PDAC will send Ramsey an invitation to attend an upcoming meeting.
In other business, PDAC president Scott Cummings commended vice president Nancy Doerr for her hard work to present the organization’s annual holiday dinner for the Northeast Detectives Division and the 2nd and 15th police districts.
The next 15th PDAC meeting will be at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the John Perzel Community Center, 2990 St. Vincent St. ••
