holiday miracles to those in need

Less than a week remains until the celebration of Christmas, and the biggest gratification for all of us at the Northeast Times is that our readers once again are making it a happier time for others facing hardship at this time of year.
In recent days, we have been making arrangements to provide holiday turkey dinners with all the trimmings and desserts to 50 families in Northeast Philadelphia. This is a tribute to individuals, businesses and community groups that contributed almost $2,400 to our Eleanor Smylie Community Fund, the holiday season campaign started 52 years ago by the late owner of the Northeast Times.
These dinners are being provided to families that appealed for help from the fund by submitting required letters that detailed their situations and offered information for verification purposes.
And you, the people of the Northeast, once again supported the fund and made this possible. Through the caring spirit and generosity of our readers, whose names we are publishing each week for well-deserved recognition, the meal campaign is helping others — typically people coping with family troubles, the loss of a job or setbacks caused by illness.
We will continue to thank contributors over the next few weeks. And any donations still to come will be held in a separate fund account to assist others.
