Police shoot man
with shotgun in Parkwood

Police shot a shotgun-toting Parkwood man repeatedly in the legs last week after the suspect allegedly robbed a local pharmacy, then refused to drop his weapon when officers ordered him to do so.
John Marcel, 55, of the 12000 block of Biscayne Drive, marched into the Rite Aid, at Academy and Byberry roads, waving a shotgun at about 7:15 p.m. on Nov. 18, said Lt. Frank Vanore, a spokesman for the Philadelphia Police Department.
Marcel allegedly pointed his weapon at store employees, ordered patrons to get out and demanded pain medications from a manager. During the heist, a civilian flagged down a Highway Patrol officer outside the store and alerted him to the crime in progress. An off-duty cop showed up moments later.
Both officers waited outside the business as other on-duty cops arrived at the scene, Vanore said.
When Marcel exited the front of the building, the assembled officers ordered him to drop his gun. Instead, the suspect allegedly pointed his weapon at officers. Four officers fired at Marcel, who was wounded four times in his legs, Vanore said.
Marcel was taken to Frankford Hospital-Torresdale, where he was listed in fair condition.
No officers or civilians reported injuries.
After the gunfire, police SWAT officers secured and cleared the store, Vanore said. Marcel was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and weapons-related offenses.
Northeast Detectives and the police department’s internal affairs division continue to investigate the incident. ••
