Zoning decisions top
Lawncrest meeting
The Lawncrest Community Association last week weighed in on three zoning issues.
The organization, which met on Nov. 20, is urging the Zoning Board of Adjustment to approve a 10-foot-high fence around a proposed Sprint cell phone tower at 6610 Hasbrook Ave.
In October, the ZBA gave tentative approval for the tower, which would stand 120 feet. The board prefers a 6-foot-high fence. The LCA wants a higher fence for security reasons.
The civic association is opposing a proposed beer distributor and beauty supply shop at 5699 Rising Sun Ave. (at Godfrey Avenue). The property once housed a dollar store.
Also, the association is opposed to a proposed duplex on the 6700 block of Martins Mill Road.
In other news from the meeting, the group held a moment of silence for police officer Chuck Cassidy, who was shot to death a month ago while checking on an armed robbery at a West Oak Lane Dunkin Donuts.
Firefighter Mark Stewart offered fire-prevention tips. Stewart, of the departments fire prevention division, distributed smoke detectors.
The Lawncrest Town Watch is looking for volunteers. Anyone interested should call president Ken Hyers at 215-745-1200.
The Lawncrest 4th of July Committee is also looking for volunteers. Call 215-651-8470 for more information.
The Friends of Tacony Creek Park will meet on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m., at the Salvation Army Citadel, at Rising Sun Avenue and Van Kirk Street.
Lawncrest Community Association will meet again on Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m., at St. William parish hall, at Argyle and Robbins streets.
