Everybody
has a story
StoryCorps, the National Storytelling Project, is in the City of Brotherly Love collecting the life stories of people in the Greater Philadelphia area.
The StoryCorps Air Stream trailer/mobile recording studio is camped outside of the WHYY studios at Independence Hall through Nov. 28 to collect personal recollections and interviews.
The StoryCorps project is probably one of the best public radio broadcast projects in the country, according to Christine Dempsey, WHYY vice president and chief content officer.
StoryCorps participants record in pairs, oftentimes with friends, parents and grandparents. When the 40-minute recording session is through, they receive a CD of the interview, and a copy, with their permission, will be archived at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
Beginning in January, some of the Philadelphia interviews will be produced in local features, with some winding up as part of the national project, which airs at 8:20 a.m. every Friday during Morning Edition on WHYY-91FM.
While all the interview slots are full, you can check for cancellations at 1-800-850-4406. You can also attend a book reading of Listening is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project, at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at the National Constitution Center, Independence Mall, 525 Arch St.
