A smashing success
from the Wild Thing

Power Windows and Siding decided to spice up its monthly contest that awards lucky homeowners with a new front window.
The company teamed with the Phillies and WIP (610 AM) to bring attention to the sweepstakes.
Among a group of 10 nominees, the company chose the Cummings family of West Mayfair to receive a replacement window.
For their part, the Phillies and WIP selected former relief pitcher Mitch Williams to help the Power Windows and Siding employees get a start on the job.
Williams was an effective closer for the Phillies but was known as the "Wild Thing" because of his penchant for throwing pitches out of the strike zone.
Last week, on Halloween morning, his job was to throw a baseball at the bay window of the Cummings household on the 3100 block of Friendship St.
After making some warm-up tosses in the street, the left-hander stood on the sidewalk, looked up at the window and smashed a piece of the glass with one pitch.
Calling all the action was sports comedian Joe Conklin, who did his best impersonation of Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas. The Phillie Phanatic and Gutter Monster, the mascot for Power Windows and Siding, also made appearances.
Williams talked about the stunt on WIP’s morning show.
"Upper left-hand corner, up and away. What did you expect," he told host Angelo Cataldi.
A radar gun clocked the throw at 72 miles per hour, though Williams estimated the ball was traveling at close to 80 mph.
Williams signed autographs for many of the 300 people in attendance. Marinucci’s Deli provided hoagies, and Slack’s Hoagie Shack offered samples of its "Wild Thing" sandwich.
The Cummings family was nominated by a neighbor across the street and selected, in part, because WIP and the Phils thought residents would turn out in a densely populated neighborhood such as Mayfair. It also didn’t hurt that Cataldi’s wife is from the area.
The event brought some much-needed attention to Scott Cummings’ campaign for a seat on Traffic Court.
A bunch of other Republican candidates in Tuesday’s election stopped by. They included mayoral candidate Al Taubenberger, City Councilman Jack Kelly, state Supreme Court candidate Mike Krancer and Council hopeful Gary Grisafi. ••
