Crime tops talk
at Morrell meeting

Crime and quality-of-life issues, which residents claim police continually fail to respond to, were the main topics of a brief and meagerly attended meeting of the Morrell Civic Association on Oct. 25.
Morrell Park started a Town Watch months ago, but the group said more people are needed to help patrol. The community sees youths who make mischief at parks at night as one of its biggest problems.
Civic association president Ed Shonewolf told the group about a new curfew center in Castor Gardens that will serve youths from the 2nd, 7th and 8th police districts, but he said that no representatives from the 8th district have informed local residents about it. The center will open next month at Max Myers Playground, 1601 Hellerman St.
Shonewolf said it’s up to the citizens to keep their neighborhood safe.
"This is concrete evidence that we need to be here as a community," he said.
In other news from the meeting, the group heard from David Oh, a Republican candidate for City Council-at-large, and Sean McAleer, Democratic candidate in the 10th Councilmanic District.
The Morrell Civic Association’s next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m., at Christ the King Church, 3252 Chesterfield Road. ••
