COVER STORY:

Honors for Hazell

Mary Jane Hazell wants everyone to get something straight about her. The recent award she received from the Philadelphia Eagles has absolutely nothing to do with her age. In fact, Hazell still has the better part of a year to go before she reaches her 75th birthday, although to a lot of folks in Somerton it probably seems like she’s been around forever.
So when the Eagles and Dunkin’ Donuts recently compiled a list of their 75 Greatest Living Philadelphians to coincide with the team’s 75th anniversary season, Hazell made the cut on the strength of her lifetime of service to her community.

ENDORSEMENTS:

Nutter for mayor

Let’s get right to it. We think Michael Nutter deserves the chance to be mayor and make Philadelphia a better place to live once more.
It’d be easier if the former city councilman were a slam-dunk, ironclad lock — an obvious and easy choice over his opponent — but he’s not, which is a good thing for voters.
His Republican challenger in Tuesday’s election, Al Taubenberger, a Northeast Philly boy through and through, is no slouch. Intelligent, affable and in tune with the issues, Taubenberger, currently president of the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, is a worthy opponent.

Krajewski in the 6th

Back in 2004, when City Councilwoman Joan Krajewski announced that she’d be retiring after her seventh four-year term, Democrats and Republicans began eyeing the 2007 race to replace her.
A fierce battle in the primary and general elections seemed certain.
In the meantime, Democrats and some Republicans who wanted Krajewski to stay and were fearful of who would succeed her began lobbying the longtime Mayfair resident to stay.

Grisafi in the 7th

Unlike the office of mayor, whose occupant should need no on-the-job training, being a novice to city government is not necessarily a liability for rookie Council members.
In the 7th Councilmanic District, voters have a choice between a Democratic lady who is the outsider’s insider, a Republican gentleman who is 100 percent outsider, and an independent candidate, Luis A. Pineda, who is no threat to either.

At-large seats need new occupants

When Philadelphians have a neighborhood problem, they can seek help from their local member of City Council. The city is evenly divided into 10 district Council seats.
A look at the high re-election rate of district Council members would seem to indicate that they are doing a good job.
But if they or their staffs become unresponsive, citizens have a backup option. They can call one of the seven at-large Council members.
