Woman leaps to her death
from Boulevard overpass

Many of the fatal accidents that have occurred on the Roosevelt Boulevard in the last two years involved a car hitting a pedestrian.
The reverse happened on Tuesday morning. At about 6:15 a.m., an unidentified 40-year-old white female reportedly jumped from an overpass to her death on the southbound inner lanes of the 7200 block of the Boulevard, police said.
The distance between the railing from which the woman jumped and the road surface is 21 feet, according to Jenny Robinson, spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The woman’s body hit a car traveling on the roadway, and the driver stopped, according to a police spokesman. The department is not releasing the driver’s name.
The southbound inner lanes of the Boulevard were closed at Borbeck Avenue, which caused traffic to back up from Rhawn Street to Cottman Avenue. The roadway later reopened.
More than a dozen pedestrians and motorists have lost their lives on the Boulevard in the last two years. The most recent fatal accidents occurred on Sept. 14. That morning, a Lawndale man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while crossing the busy roadway at Oxford Avenue. Police arrested the driver later that day. That evening, two people died and three others were injured when their vehicle crossed the median and struck another car. ••
