Serial bank robbery
suspect in custody
Philadelphia police officers last week arrested a man suspected in 11 bank robberies, including four in the Northeast.
The suspect is Frederick Baynes, 40, a homeless man whose last known address was on the 1800 block of W. Berks St. in North Philadelphia.
Baynes was arrested Friday morning in South Philadelphia after officers responded to reports of a man breaking into a vehicle. He allegedly robbed a Mayfair bank four days earlier.
Officers found him sleeping in a van at Smedley Street and Packer Avenue and transported him to the 1st Police District. There, members of the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force took him into custody to face federal bank robbery charges.
In each of the robberies, Baynes is alleged to have presented a demand note before leaving with an undisclosed amount of money. The crime spree started in July.
Baynes is suspected in robberies of the Wachovia Bank branch at 9101 Roosevelt Blvd. on Sept. 18 and Sept. 28 and the PNC Bank at 6855 Frankford Ave. on Oct. 1 and Oct. 22.
