Lawncrest presses ‘yes’
for cell phone tower

The Lawncrest Community Association last week voted not to oppose the erection of a 120-foot-high Sprint Nextel tower at 6610 Hasbrook Ave.
In a show of hands after a presentation by developer Bob Altenbach and engineer Philip Burtner, only a couple of people voted to oppose the tower.
In other news from the Oct. 16 meeting, the group held a moment of silence for longtime member Alice Riehl, who died Oct. 13 at age 83. Widowed at 46, she held a job and raised 10 children. She was also a 35th Ward Democratic committeewoman.
Republican mayoral candidate Al Taubenberger stopped briefly at the meeting.

The Friends of Tacony Creek Park will meet on Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel, at Rising Sun Avenue and Van Kirk Street.
ExpressCare will hold a grand-opening celebration in Shop Rite, at 6301 Oxford Ave., on Tuesday at 10 a.m. The office is staffed by a nurse practitioner and offers treatment for various illnesses, physical examinations and screenings for diabetes, pregnancy and strep throat.
State Reps. Dwight Evans (D-203rd dist.) and Mark Cohen (D-202nd dist.) will host a neighborhood meeting on quality-of-life issues on Thursday, Nov. 1, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Benjamin Franklin School, 5737 Rising Sun Ave.
Representatives from city, state and private agencies will be on hand.
Lawncrest Community Association’s next meeting will be on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. at St. William parish hall, at Argyle and Robbins streets. ••
