Cut for the Cure
is on Sunday
The eighth annual Cut for the Cure will take place Sunday, Oct. 14, at New Image Hair Salon.
New Image, located at 2522 Welsh Road (at Roosevelt Boulevard) in the Tremont Shopping Center, will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The fund-raiser, held each year on the second Sunday in October, raises money for breast cancer and prostate cancer research.
The public is invited to participate in the event. New Image owner John McDonald will have a television so football fans wont miss the Eagles game against the New York Jets.
McDonald and his wife of 35 years, Ginny, have both battled cancer. Ginny McDonald has suffered a serious setback recently, with doctors finding a brain tumor.
"Im dedicating it all to her," John McDonald said of the benefit.
Proceeds will benefit Fox Chase Cancer Center and Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore.
McDonald and the New Image staff will give haircuts to men, women and children for $15. Theyll be joined by Irv Schwartz, owner of Curl Cage Beauty Salon, at 7957 Verree Road. Sharon Weisman, a former New Image stylist who has overcome breast cancer, will work at the front desk.
Everybody who gets a haircut will receive a pair of chocolate scissors. For an additional $10, they can buy a T-shirt. Blue shirts will promote prostate cancer awareness, while pink shirts will signify the fight against breast cancer.
Individual or family portraits will be taken for $15. A sports calendar will be for sale for $10, including autographs from the models. Hot dogs and soft pretzels will be sold.
McGruff the Crime Dog will make an appearance. Entertainment will be provided by Sounds of Liberty Barbershop Quartet and a disc jockey.
Antique cars will be on site, and there will be a karate demonstration. The Masons and Citizens Bank will also be part of the celebration.
"It will be pretty entertaining," McDonald said.
McDonald, who has formed a non-profit corporation, raised $15,000 last year.
