Three injured in pair
of weekend shootings

Philadelphia police have suspects in two Northeast shootings last weekend that wounded three people, including two critically.
Capt. Jack McGinnis, of Northeast Detectives, declined to identify the suspects in both incidents, which resulted from apparent domestic disputes.
The first occurred at about 4 a.m. on Friday inside an apartment on the 4900 block of Saul St. in Frankford. Officers responded to a 911 call to find Larry Coleman, 25, who lived in that apartment, on the floor with a single wound of the head. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital in critical condition.
Witnesses told investigators that they heard an altercation inside Coleman’s apartment that included six or seven gunshots. Neighbors familiar with Coleman said he dresses in women’s clothes, McGinnis said. Some even thought he was a woman, according to the detective captain.
Investigators believe that a man visited Coleman, possibly to seek the victim’s services as an escort. The individual left before police arrived and remains at large.
A second shooting occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday in the street on the 5600 block of Summerdale Ave. in Oxford Circle, McGinnis said.
An argument on Saturday night between Herbert Whitfield, 42, of Bridge Street near Summerdale, and a younger male believed to be an acquaintance of Whitfield’s daughter may have precipitated the later altercation, McGinnis said.
The younger male allegedly shot Whitfield three times — in the arm, chest and leg. Desmond Childs, 18, of the 6900 block of Rutland St., was in the line of fire and suffered a wound of the lower leg.
Both victims were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center, where Whitfield was in critical condition. Childs’ injuries were considered less severe.
Police are trying to locate the shooter. ••
