JCC Klein Branch
to host two festivals
The Klein Branch of Jewish Community Centers in Somerton tries to offer programming that focuses on the mind, body and spirit.
In adhering to its mission, the center next month will offer two weeklong festivals that cover all three of those areas. Both events are open to Klein members and the general public.
From Aug. 6 to 10, older adults can discover the artist within with Season of Sensations, an art and drama exploration. Classes will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The event lineup features clay making, glass painting and jewelry design classes that culminate in a participant art show. All classes are being conduced by Joan Beyer and Sandi Diamond, who lead other arts courses at Klein.
The workshop even includes a performing arts component with Philly Senior Stage Drama, being held Tuesday through Friday afternoons. Philly Senior Stage actor and instructor Robb Hutter will lead the course, which will offer participants a chance to engage in a real stage play at the end of the week.
Fees for the full arts and drama program are $30 for Klein members and $40 for non-members. The art-only portion is $25 for members and $35 for non-members. The drama-only portion is $10 for members and $18 for non-members.
The fee includes lunch daily. Space is limited, so interested individuals are asked to register by July 26.
The week of Aug. 17, seniors can see if the calming creative activities from the week before managed to lower their blood pressure with free health screenings.
Events during the Jumpstart to a Healthy Life week will take place every day from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and include tests for blood sugar, cholesterol and stroke risks. Participants can also attend lectures or get moving with free exercise classes.
Participating agencies include Nazareth Hospital and Albert Einstein Medical Center.
Klein also encourages non-members who participate in the festivals to look into ongoing arts and exercise classes, many of which are free, held at the center.
