The 2nd Police District Advisory Council needs activities for its Community Day event next month.
Each year, the group hosts the event along with a leisurely bike race with the police to promote safety in the district. It will take place Saturday, June 23, beginning at 9 a.m., in Roosevelt Mall in conjunction with the malls sidewalk sale.
The group has plenty of resource tables for the event but needs fun activities for guests, especially children.
"Not only do I need people to help sponsor these things, I need them to do them," Ken Hyers, the groups vice chairman, said at the groups May 8 meeting.
The group needs face painters and would like a dance or musical troupe to perform, but it cant afford to pay for transportation to get such a group to the event.
Hyers said that the organization is limited in what type of activities it can have, since the event takes place in a parking lot. For instance, it cannot bring animals onto the property.
Any individual, group or institution interested in sponsoring an activity at the event can call chairwoman Lynn Genetti at 215-806-8082 or send an e-mail to her at: lynngenetti@msn.com
In other news from the meeting:
o Capt. Michael McCarrick informed the group that overall crime in the district has gone down slightly, but that automobile thefts have increased.
He encourages residents to sign up for SAVE (Stolen Auto Verification Effort). The program involves putting a free sticker on your car to help find it if it is ever stolen. The program is geared toward motorists who rarely drive between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. If police officers see a vehicle with the stickers during those hours, they can pull over the motorist and use the identification number to see who registered the car with the SAVE program and compare it with the license of the driver.
Residents can sign up for SAVE at the Community Day event.
o Operation Town Watch Integrated Services will host its 12th annual conference on Saturday, June 2, at 8:30 a.m., at the Sheraton Hotel in Center City.
A dozen workshops will be offered on topics such as online safety and street smarts. The Town Watch of the Year award will be given to a group at the event.
