Remembering Officer Skerski

It was a quiet night at Pat’s Café, not unlike many mid-spring weeknights there. It was the kind of night that regular patrons have grown to expect and to treasure in their friendly Northwood tavern.
The Phillies played on the big TV screens hanging from the rafters, while the guys and gals sitting at the bar debated the merits of Charlie Manuel’s latest managerial move. Other folks played darts and pool in the back.
Beer flowed as freely as the good cheer.
This night has unfolded countless times at Pat’s, just as it did one particular evening last week, and as it might have one year ago on May 8, 2006.

Maria Quinones-Sanchez

for Council

Nobody knows better than the voters in the 7th Councilmanic District that the rough and tough, plain-spoken, disgraced bribe-taker Rick Mariano is a tough act to follow.
When the district’s Democrats step into their voting booths on Tuesday, they’ll have somewhat of a tough choice to replace that tough act.
Dan Savage, leader of the 23rd Ward, has been on the job for five months, having been essentially appointed by his fellow ward leaders last November in a special election to replace the imprisoned Mariano.

For Democratic at-large seats,

old blood and new is a great slate

On Tuesday, Democrats will nominate five candidates for at-large City Council seats.
In a field of 19, more than half merit consideration. That group of qualified candidates does not include the sole Northeast hopeful, former state Sen. Milton Street.
The nominees will square off against the five Republicans in November for seven seats.
The Times has decided to endorse two incumbents and three challengers . . .
