A representative of the city’s Department of Human Services told members of the 15th Police District Advisory Council last week that a city curfew center will be set up at the Frankford Group Ministry.
FGM, at 4620 Griscom St., has offered to accommodate the center. Ron George, the visitor from DHS, said it is hoped that the facility will open by the end of the month.
George put out a call for volunteers, as did the 15th district’s commander, Capt. Frank Bachmayer, who said the center is going to help tremendously, especially during the summer. Prospective volunteers can call 215-686-3150.
The city is establishing these centers to collar youngsters who violate curfew ordinances. Parents must pick up their children at the centers or the youngsters will be placed in the custody of DHS.
Bachmayer, like other officials, is hopeful that crackdowns on curfew and truancy violations will have an impact on crime.
In other business, Officers Michael Winkler and Stanley Galiczynski were named Officers of the Month for February. Working as a team, they recorded 22 arrests for the month.
On Feb. 10, they responded to a call involving a man who had been robbed by a ski-masked gunman. Along with the victim, they surveyed the 5400 block of Oakland St., where the gunman had fled. The officers found the suspect in a residence on the street and apprehended him. They also recovered a shotgun and the victim’s possessions. The suspect was charged with robbery, aggravated assault theft and other offenses. ••
The next meeting of the 15th PDAC will be at 7 p.m. Monday, April 30, at the John Perzel Center, 2900 St. Vincent St. ••
