A mail collection box that has been revamped to look like the Star Wars android R2D2, the spunky robot servant of Luke Skywalker, is one of only 400 that have emerged in high-visibility areas throughout the United States.
The robot-like collection boxes that appeared on March 16 will remain in place for approximately three weeks. The installation of these converted "droid" mailboxes led the way toward promoting an exciting joint venture between the U.S. Postal Service and Lucasfilm Ltd.
The Postal Service celebrates the 30th anniversary of Star Wars and plans to promote the Star Wars theme through the introduction of Star Wars-related postal products, including an online program that lets postal customers vote for their favorite Star Wars stamp,
Of 15 proposed designs, the Postal Service plans to manufacture and sell the stamp with the most online votes. Voting began March 28 at www.uspsjedimaster.com, the same day the Postal Service was set to announce more information about the joint venture with Lucasfilm Ltd.
The winning stamp will be announced at the official dedication at the 30th anniversary Star Wars Celebration IV in Los Angeles on May 25. ••
