Darting for the finish line
The Quaker City English Dart League raised more than $13,000 in support of Crossing the Finish Line, a non-profit organization that assists young adult cancer patients.
The money was raised at the recent Cancer Dart Shoot at Jokers Bar & Grill, 7312 Castor Ave.
The event attracted more than 300 people, including 200-plus dart shooters. State Rep. Mike McGeehan (D-173rd dist.) and Russ Jasinski, president of the dart league, kicked off the occasion.
Participants won door prizes and auctioned items while entertainment was provided by Smokin K.B.s Blues & Rock Music.
The lead organizers were QCEDL board member Cathy Jasinski, Women of Philadelphia English Dart League president Gail Flaherty, Bob Scott, Mark Cochrane and Bob Woerner, with help from dozens of volunteers.
The benefit was started because of the positive experience Russ and Cathy Jasinski had with Crossing the Finish Line, which aided the couple and their children after Cathy was diagnosed with brain cancer two years ago.
The charity paid for an eight-day vacation at Disney World for the family from Port Richmond.
"I just want to express my heartfelt appreciation for the support we received from our sponsors, the participants and other darts leagues in the area," Russ Jasinski said.
"The darts community came together in the spirit of compassion to make the event a great success and establish the benchmark for next year."
