North Catholic inducts
Hall of Fame members
Five men were inducted Tuesday night into the Northeast Catholic High School Hall of Fame.
The 19th annual ceremony took place in the school auditorium, followed by a cocktail reception in the foyer.
The inductees were:
James Dugan (Class of 1963), Business/Military/ Labor.
A native of Kensington, he is secretary/treasurer of the International Longshoremens Association Local 1242. At North Catholic, he served on student council, played freshman basketball and lettered in football and baseball. He served as a union trustee and vice president until being elected to his current position in 1990. He is an active member of the Kensington Memorial AMVETS Post 146 and has served as that groups adjutant and financial officer. Hes 61 and lives in Parkwood. He and his wife Mary have three children.
Jim Arnosky (Class of 1964), Arts/Entertainment/Education.
A 60-year-old native of New York City, he is a renowned writer, illustrator and musician who has enjoyed tremendous success in the field of childrens books. Hes written 90 books on nature subjects and illustrated 46 other books for various authors. Hes been awarded the Christopher Medal, Orbis Pictus Award, Eva L. Gordan Award and the American Association for the Advancement of Science Award for his colorful illustrations. He and his wife Deanna have two daughters.
Vincent E. Furlong (Class of 1950), Service to Northeast Catholic High School and Community.
A Port Richmond native, he is the former executive director of the Police Athletic League. At North Catholic, he served as senior class secretary and was a member of the schools 1949 championship football team. He entered the Philadelphia Police Department in 1956 and was assigned to PAL six years later, supervising, counseling and administering the activities of 30,000 boys and girls at 18 locations. He and his wife of 54 years, Jane Walker Furlong, have five children and 11 grandchildren. They live in Parkwood.
James A. Gallagher (Class of 1947), Athletics.
A West Oak Lane native, he is the former director of public relations, sales and marketing for the Philadelphia Eagles. At North, he was a member of the schools 1946 championship cross country team. He joined the Eagles in 1949 and stayed until retiring in 1995. Over those 46 years, he worked as the director of personnel and traveling secretary and in the alumni relations department. He also worked part-time for the National Football League from 1959-62. A resident of Plymouth Meeting, he and his wife Betty have six children and 15 grandchildren.
The Rev. John Dennis, OSFS (Class of 1937), Science/Religion.
He is a former principal at Father Judge High School, former vice principal at North Catholic and the founding chairman of a program in the Archdiocese of Philadelphias Catholic Social Services department that deals with AIDS patients and those infected with HIV. He entered the Oblates of St. Francis DeSales following graduation and was ordained in 1945. He earned a degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of America. He later earned masters degrees in English and education.
He had two face-to-face meetings with Pope John Paul II and concelebrated Mass with him twice. The pope, who died in 2005, presented him with the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (For Church and Pontiff) award.
