New Pennsylvania House Speaker Dennis OBrien said his rise to power wasnt a prelude to switching parties or revenge against a longtime political rival.
Instead, OBrien (R-169th dist.) thought he was a good choice to lead reform efforts in the fractious House of Representatives.
"It was an opportunity for unification," he said. "Hopefully, well have a more civil atmosphere."

are less than thrilled
State Rep. John Taylor sat next to fellow Republican Dennis OBrien for 18 years in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and calls him "one of the finest people Ive ever met."
Taylor (R-177th dist.) is a close ally of another Northeast Republican, Rep. John Perzel, who served as majority leader and speaker. OBrien (R-169th dist.) and Perzel (R-172nd dist.) have no such relationship.

Theyre only kids
If the powers-that-be in government and law enforcement required people to take a stupidity test before they had children, there would be an awful lot of childless couples in America.
Topping the list of stupid people tricks are parents who smoke in the presence of their kids an atrocity that should have been outlawed generations ago. Parents who dont care to put their kids in seat belts or child-safety seats arent much better.
But just as bad are the folks who let their kids do . . .
