Carjack suspect sought
Police are looking for a suspect who carjacked a woman from Roosevelt Mall to a rural North Jersey community.
The incident happened at about 10 a.m. on May 11. A 21-year-old Feltonville woman parked her car near a Wendys restaurant, a short distance from the storefront where she worked.
The woman exited her car and walked to the rear passengers side to get her pocketbook. Thats when the suspect pulled out a gun and told "Tracy" to get in the car.
Police said the victim told the suspect that her name was not Tracy.
"Youve got the wrong person," she said.
The woman showed the man her drivers license, proving her name was not Tracy.
The suspect made a call on his cell phone.
"I got the wrong f girl," he said. "I cant f believe it."
The kidnapper told his victim to get in the trunk as he drove east on Cottman Avenue. She remembers him playing the radio loud while he drove. After about two hours, the car came to a stop and the man walked away.
The victim remembered she had her cell phone and called 911 at 12:03 p.m. The call was answered by the Franklin Township (N.J.) Police Department.
The light on the phone allowed the woman who will be married next May to see a latch that she was able to pull to push away the back seat and get out of the trunk.
The police dispatcher told the woman, who did not know where she was, to stay in the car and lock the doors.
State and local police used canine and air units to try to locate her. They even closed schools in a 50-square-mile area. Officers eventually found her on Sky Manor Road in Alexandria Township, Hunterdon County, 100 miles from Cottman and Bustleton avenues, where the adventure began.
New Jersey police contacted Northeast Detectives at about 2 p.m. Sgt. Andy Smith and Detective Chris Gilman drove to the scene and took the woman back to Philadelphia to interview her.
"Were glad it turned out the way it did," Smith said. "Shes a very lucky person."
Smith believes the suspect used either I-95, Route 1 or Route 202 on the trip. In similar carjackings, he said, the victim has just a 20 percent chance of staying alive.
The suspect is black, 20 to 30 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 170 to 190 pounds and well built. He had dreadlocks and had a medium to dark complexion. He wore a black and yellow baseball cap, with a white shirt under a basketball jersey and baggy jeans with a tiger patch on the right leg.
The victims car is a blue 2000 Saturn with a Pennsylvania license plate.
There are no witnesses or surveillance tape.
Smith indicated that the suspect could face life in prison for abducting someone over state lines a federal crime. He could not explain why the man did not drop off his victim earlier.
